In this tutorial we are going to learn how to install magento package. This tutorial will explain about how to install magento manually using the FTP.

Step 1:

Download Magento Installation Package

As the first step you have download the community package.  Go to url https://magento.com/tech-resources/download and download the latest stable community edition. Click Here to go the official magento website to download the package. The community edition is for the development and customization.

To download the package from the official site, you need to have free account. If you don’t have account you can create it with an valid email id. Login with the magento login credentials to download the pack.

Step 2:

Extract and Upload

After Downloading the package, kindly extract it and keep it ready to upload to the web server. Now you are ready to upload the files to the web server, simplest way to upload the magento installation files is FTP. This can be done by using any FTP client application like FileZilla, CoreFTP, Cyberduck or Others.

To upload the files to the server, you need the following FTP credentials

  • FTP Host
  • Username
  • Password
  • Port(optional)

Using the FTP Credentials connect to the web hosting server and upload the files.

Step 3:

Create and Configure Database

Now you have to create a MySQL database and assign a user with full access to install magento. To create the database, kindly logon to your hosting account. After you create your MySQL database and assign a user with all required privileges. Ensure that you note down the database credentials in a safe place for future use.

  • Database Name
  • Username and
  • Password

Kindly store the database credentials for the proceeding installation process.

Step 4:

Magento Installation Process

After successfully creating the database for magento now go to main URL, where you have uploaded the magento installation files. When you navigate to the main URL it will open the following page.

Read the terms and conditions in the page, then check I agree to the terms and conditions box and click continue.

Set Language and Currency

Next step is to set up language, location and time zone for our site.  Select appropriate region, language and time zone from the drop down menu. Once you have selected the appropriate  region, language and time zone, then click continue.

If you are installing magento for development or review then, I would recommend you leave the option as it is. You can change the setting later using the configuration menu from magento admin panel.

Configure Database Credentials

In this step you need to configure database, now enter the database credentials and then enter the database prefix. Make sure that you check the option “Skip Base URL validation before next step” , then click the Continue to proceed.

For security reason you can have customized admin url. To have the customized admin url, change the Admin Path value.  Normally Admin Path will be admin in default, change it if you need more security to you site and save the url for future.

Setup Admin Credentials

In this step you are requested to setup the admin credentials for the future use. Please do not have the username as Admin, since its easy for an hacker to get into the system easily.  Create the password as complex as you can, which will give more security to the site.

It recommended to leave Encryption Key field empty since, magento will automatically generate a key for your site. You can find it on the installation completion page. After entering the credentials for admin, then click on continue to complete the magento installation process and to set all.

Congratulations, you are successfully installed the magento application. Make sure you store the encryption key in a safe place, you will be prompt to use it in future.

Successful Magento Installation

Now you can visit the frontend and login to you backend to customize the site as per your need.
